A Bit of Perth

The Tranby Building, 575 Wellington St, Perth.

Built 1906, Architect; Lt Col ReginaldSummerhayes MC (the scion of a line of architects in W.A), Builder; W Massey (although I cannot find a suitably aged “W Massey”. I suspect the correct name is Edward massey of Claremont.)

W.J. Cotton was obviously a reasonably successful businessman yet he does not seem to have advertised. Searches of the early newspapers of Perth and the major country districts fail to reveal a single advertisement. Perhaps that is why he is no longer in business.

He simply does not appear on the internet. Sneaky person.

Still, the building has fascinating features such as a rendered facade, quoining pediments and battlement parapets as well as rusticated pilasters!

Any building with rusticated pilasters is worthy of being a bit of Perth. And rusticated pilasters DO appear on the internet.
