Wellington St. Perth CBD. The old Sargood Building.
Ok, I asked myself. What did Sargood import and why isn’t there a “Sargood” on the giant genealogical file of Western Australians to which I have access?
I began a Google search and found a Sargood from New Zealand on an Anzac List.
“Lieutenant Cedric Rolfe SARGOOD, Otago Battalion, NZEF. Born Dunedin, NZ. Single; Warehouseman, Sargodd Son & Ewen Ltd., of Marinoto, Newington Avenue, Dunedin, New Zealand. Next of kin: Father; Percy Rolfe Sargood, of Newington Avenue, Dunedin, New Zealand. Killed in action on Chunuk Bair, northern Anzac, on 9 August 1915, aged 22. No Known Grave.”
Hmmm – There is a “Ewen” mentioned in this Obit. as well as on the plaque. Interesting.
Another search for Sargood came up with “Senator Lieutenant Colonel Sir Frederick Sargood“. Yes, he had holdings in Perth, as well as in other parts of the Continent and he had a connection with New Zealand. He died there on a visit.
The building has another military connection. Lieutenant General Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs KCB, KCMG, VD was the architect for the building. We have seen at least one other example of his work.
As an afterthought, the architect out-ranked the owner.
