Built by Bishop Hale, the Cloisters was a feature of western St Georges Terrace for nearly 150 years. Then the Anglican Church decided to use some of its assets to raise cash for its works.
So the gardens and outhouses were replaced by a huge skyscraper. The Cloisters however remains. Dwarfed and now looking totally out of place, it is still in use today as a commercial premises.
The Cloisters, the Boy’s School, and the Barracks Archway … all perfect for the area. It’s the damned concrete and steel cereal boxes which are out of place!
