A Bit of Perth

The Peninsula Hotel, Railway Pde., Maylands.

Built 1906, Builder Friederich Wilhelm Gustave Liebe who was born in Wittenberg, Germany in 1862.He was taught at the Vienna Technical School of Building and arrived in Perth in 1891. He was the builder of His Majesty’s Theatre (1904) and the Public Art Gallery (1908).

Having gone within a whisker of being destroyed in 1974, public action saved the Peninsular Hotel from being destroyed. No longer a hostelry, it has gone through the “home to public organisations” stage and is now home to a coffee shop chain.

At least the cupola remains to watch over Maylands.
