Not much more nautical than this.
Despite the recession we are apparently suffering, the iron ore keeps on heading out of Australia to China.
This is a bulk ore ship coming into Port Hedland, yesterday morning, to pick up yet more iron for China to on-sell to the rest of the world.
The grey sky and the general haziness of the photograph is due to the smoke haze in the air.
Where did the smoke come from?
All the way from Victoria. The prevailing winds from the southerly change which turned the bushfires there into killers blew on up the east coast of Australia and then swung west across the top end. It arrived in Punmu on Wednesday night and I drove in it for 600 Km, could not see the sun except as a pale yellow orb at sunset on Thursday, flew to Perth and could not see the ground from 33,000 ft for the first hour of a two hour flight!
Those fires have been huge!
Sorry for drifting from the nautical theme but, at the moment, everything in Australia is about those fires.

Yep, mid last week my Brindabella Ranges were wreathed in smoke.

The fires in Australia sound apocalyptical. And if not, definitely a sign of global warming and a need to be more protective of our global environment.

I guess I didn’t realize that Australia supplied iron ore to China. I learn something every time I participate in PhotoHunt. As for the smoke causing the haze, the terrible fires in your nation have been a main topic of discussion even here in the States. Know that you and your countrymen are in my thoughts and prayers.

That’s a perfect shot for the nautical theme and quite beautiful. I like the contrast between the blue in the boat and the orange tones of the land.

Terrible about the fires.
Like your photo, though. I spent three weeks in Australia several years ago — and loved it. Even went down in the zinc mines near Broken Hill.

Great photo. Yes we are certainly seeing a range of tragedies here in Australia. I can also tell you that the rain continues in QLD and with 60% of the state in flood there has been a lot of devastation. The fires are taking their toll and we are all doing whatever we can to support fire and flood victims. Our thoughts go out to all who have been affected and also to the wonderful volunteers who have given so much of their time to help. Despite the natural disasters we really do live in the greatest country on Earth

I’m sorry about the wildfires and the fact that some were set intentionally makes it so tragic. The haze is a somber reminder of the lives lost. It’s a pretty scene, though.

Well I am glad that some goods are still being sold overseas, despite the recession.
What with the fires and the floods poor old Australia is getting a lambasting. So sad. If only one could move all the rain to the south.
I am coming to visit in less than two weeks and I am very excited since I haven’t been home for almost nine years.
