Archie the boat is sinking 200 kilometres off Christmas Island. The Govt didnt sit these AS seekers on board and say take to the sea and drown in this unseaworthy clapped out fishing boat.
I share your concern but the risk of taking off in these boats must be got across to these folk.. Processing in Australia will not stop the boats coming. Stopping AS’s getting on them will stop the drownings.
All parties share the blame for deaths at sea as do we all.
Indonesia must also be held to account for their part in this. As long as there is corruption rampant in the military and police, the bribes will be taken, the official heads will look away and the smugglers will carry on their dirty evil work.
Be angry by all means, but its also solutions are needed.
But dafid, offshore processing hasn’t stopped the boats and good luck with your theory that Indonesian corruption can be fixed.

Even Clive Palmer can see that the most cost-effective solution is to load ‘em all up on planes and bring them here for processing in a corruption-free environment; close to medical and education services.
Archie, I share your outrage. People have been embarking in leaky boats, or even in things that aren’t really boats, dying in Arizonan deserts trying to make it into America for asylum or just to work for peanuts at stoop labor. Meanwhile, our response is similar to Australia, only during the Cuban migration we didn’t even do offshore processing; and the response to the Mexican immigration is to suggest we built a giant wall across our southern border.
Meanwhile, we have people in Congress who think that if a woman has been “legitimately raped” her body can shut down the process of becoming pregnant, who believe that global warming is a hoax, and just this morning one of our lovely politicians stated that the Holocaust was a hoax.
all I can conclude is that becoming a politician makes you stupid.
