Vintage Adverts

I am tempted to go back to this 1892 style of camera. Over the past week I have been experimenting with my camera settings and some of the results have been – well – odd! Now I am having troubles getting back to sensible settings. Moving from indoors to outdoors is especially annoying.

Sky Watch Friday

The suburb of Ascot has a major park area on its river foreshore. These ducks were enjoying what was a typically blue autumn day.

A Bit of Perth

Possibly the most common inhabitant of the Swan River are prawns. Next most common is this fellow. He doesn’t sting much but he is everywhere. I remember a long time ago younger brother and I got bored one Christmas afternoon. It was a hot day so we decided to go swimming in the river. There [...]

Sid and Sod

Avoiding Rommell

It was a summer night in 1942 (I can be any age I want in these tales) when we landed in a small inlet on the coast of the Red Sea. Our orders were clear. Dressed as Bedouins we were to cross the Arabian Desert to meet our contacts near the Nile where we were [...]

A Bit of Perth

In my youth I found the first of my heroes. I was able to understand the importance of the Olympic Games in Melbourne and it was a matter of pride that Shirley Strickland won sprint medals and that she was a West Aussie. Yet she was not the hero I found. He suddenly appeared in [...]

Who Should Direct the Movie Of Your Life?

The Coen Brothers Should Direct the Movie of Your Life You can’t help but see the darker side of life. You are drawn to eccentricity. You have a sharp wit, and your sense of humor can be a bit extreme. You tend to shock people.  You are an unusual character, and the people you hang [...]

A Bit of Perth

Blast Off Is On Hold

“I am sure that none of you have ever heard of the thirty year old giant shopping and industrial mall in a small country on the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula (Oman, if you need to know). A certain very strong-armed friend of mine worked on it as a foreman on the glazing and [...]

Tuesday Tune

Play it Sam. Play “As Time Goes By”. “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.”

Tony Abbott’s Climate Sutra

Australia’s Opposition Leader is a well known Climate Sceptic. On days without a “T” in its name. On days WITH a “T” in their name, he makes statements which appear to support man-made Climate Change. His position today is probably in favour. Somehow I don’t think it matters. Our “Tone” is quite happy to screw [...]

A Bit of Perth

When seen from a distance, this is the Burswood landmark and is often referred to as “The Casino”. In fact this is the Burswood Hotel. The Casino is a double storied building beside the Hotel. Not really important, I’m just being pedantic.
