Indeed. There is a subtlety in there which would escape them.
Perhaps there is another viable explaination of apparent design:
There was father Time and mother Earth and then father Time had an incestuous affair with random Mutations and after a whole host of miscarriages and with the assistance of possible Chance their union produced survival of the Fittest.
