Photo Hunt #100, Different

Each year Cottesloe Beach, near Perth on the coast of the Indian Ocean, hosts a special event.

Sculpture By The Sea.

Around fifty artistic installations are scattered around the beach, the lawns and the Surf Club Building.

This week I am highlighting one of those installations which I first saw from one angle and thought was a representation of a sailing ship.

As I got closer and my viewing angle changed, so did the shape of the now strange object.

Finally, looking at it close up and from the correct angle, it becomes a large sundial.

Definitely a case where different views give different impressions.

Speaking of different, I have a grandson who is going to be different next weekend.

He is going to become totally bald!

It is for a good cause and you may like to help him out.

Check out the serious post I put up earlier today.

  1. That is different! Large too!

It was rather big, although not overwhelming – the lines kept drawing your eye into it

  2. Interesting and totally different! Happy Weekend!

    Thanks, Yen

  3. It does look like an old fashioned ship heeling over in the first photo. These photos do indeed fit the different theme.

I have sponsored a doctor who is shaving his head. I hope your grandson does well with his campaign.

Thanks for the kind words, jmb. From Frazer as well :)

  4. The different views of it from different angles :) Nice take :P

It was a fairly difficult hunt this week – until I saw it this morning – solved a lot of problems for me :)

  5. WOW! Different angle counts! Hehe

    Thanks, Pelfy

  6. You have three totally “different” shots there – at first glance they look like three “different” objects! Absolutely fascinating.

Thanks, Dragonstar. Being beside the ocean I really thought it was a ship when I first saw it. :)

  7. that’s interesting… and different… I love stuff like this. We have a lot of art around Albuquerque in strange places as well. I like the challenge, the “wake up and think” aspect of it all.

I saw about your grandson in your earlier post. I think that’s great. I’d like to see this catch on and truly be a “WORLD’S greatest shave”. What a cool way to raise money for The Leukaemia Foundation!

Thanks, Dorid. I’m a little undecided on the whole “civic art” thing but as far as the World’s Greatest Shave is concerned, I’m with that all the way – as long as I’m not asked to be a participant :) :)

  8. First high 5 to your grandson for doing what he’s going to do!! And sea sculptures are awesome.

My Photo Hunt Different is shared, I hope, if you haven’t already, you can drop by and pay a visit. Happy weekend.

    Thanks, hootin annie.

  9. Thats really a good choice in this theme. Have a safe weekend.

    Thanks, Genny

  10. Great take on the theme. I thought it was an anchor at first. Hope you have a good weekend.

It is an interesting piece which keeps changing as you move around it

  11. my first thought? whale bones… even after it ‘became’ a sundial!

Interesting thought, daisyfae. I always associate whale bones with corsets – - -

  12. Definitely a different way of telling time! Nice choice for The Hunt.

Thanks’ Ann. I’ll have another sun dial next week (Probably not in the Photohunt :) )

  13. I still think you were right with your first idea! It does look like a sailing ship.

Thanks for visiting, Liz. It is an interesting piece and I like the nautical effect :)

  14. love the pics. I think it is my first time to see that pics. nice one! I am a new member of photo haunt and my first entry is up in here:

    hope to see you around!

Yep, I can visit but not comment on your blog – cos I am not a “Blogger” blogger – [grumble]

Welcome to photohunt, Janine. It is fun each week.

  15. Very cool to get the different angles!

    I played too :)

thanks, Teena. It was interesting walking around it.

  16. I never would have guessed that was a sundial. It looked like a part of a ship!

    Yep, it certainly changed shape!

  17. Swell ideas for different. Have a great week!

    Thanks, Snoopy.

  18. Does the gnomon turn? It (the gnomon) looks like the elipsis made by the sun in its yearly travels. Turning the gnomon would allow for different dates to be read correctly without re-aligning the whole contraption.
    Nice piece! I love sundials.

I was wondering that as well. I think as the sun moves in the sky (annual movement) it causes a different part of the gnomon to shade the dial. This possibly allows the correct time to be read all year. Although none of this was explained (it was an art show, not a science lecture) it seems likely, especially as all the parts were computer cut and assembled with great accuracy. And there was a little note about the gnomon on the installation which I should have read :(

  19. You said:
“I think as the sun moves in the sky (annual movement) it causes a different part of the gnomon to shade the dial.”

Yes, that’s why I ask if it turns. Turning would allow the thinnest part of the gnomon to move either up or down and therefore adjust to the sun’s elevation since it is a doubly-spiraled (is there a single-word term for that?) gnomon. Very interesting! If you do go back and read that note please pass it on. Email would be fine if no one else is interested.

My initial thought was that the extra width would account for the changes during the year but looking more thoughtfully, I don’t think it would do the job – possibly it IS just an interesting decoration – and it has now gone because the exhibition is over.
