Pillar Box Red has become a standard name for the brightest of red’s.
Created in the time of Queen Victoria, the British Postal system became a world-wide phenomenon and the red post boxes appeared all over the British Empire.
This one is outside the Northam Arts Centre in Western Australia.
Made in 1895 during the reign of Queen Victoria, it was still in use during the early years of Queen Elizabeth’s time on the throne. Now it needs its input slot covered to stop habitual letter posters from using this very red pillar box now that it is no longer cleared at 4.oo pm.

A great entry for the theme! Very clever, too!
Thanks for the kind words, Katya
“Pillar Box Red” great! But the kids over here wouldn’t know what kind of red that is. Oh well!
My red’s up Work of the Poet
Or did someone else say that ?
It is strange how we are divided by a common language
But I love the color, Archie!!
It is very red, isn’t it
Wow…very interesting…thanks for sharing the info!
I do ramble on, don’t I. Thanks for the visit.
What a lovely letterbox. Our in the US are all plain blue ones.
My photo hunt pictures are up now too!
Red is so much more exciting. Blue would get lost in the background
This is a great take on the theme, its awesome to see ho other Countries do things! I love the look of the red mail boxes! So you do NOT have postal delivery on Saturdays? or just pick up from those boxes on weekdays? My photo is up, please come and visit
we used to have deliveries twice a day and once on Saturdays, but that was 50 years ago. Service has slipped! Pick-ups by the Postal Service still occur on the weekends.
That is an awesome shot!
Thanks Heather

Thanks for the kind words, Tab.
that’s unique. i love reading about histories and this entry is definitely one of them
My version of red
Have a great weekend ahead !
Thanks, I enjoy history as well – the disturbing part is that stuff I remember is now being treated as history!
What an interesting choice I thought everyone would do leaves! Shame it is no longer in use
I was tempted by some poinsettia leaves but decided to go with this one.
Never knew they had Red mail boxes. I think they stand out more than our usual blue. Great photo and have a good weekend.
I never realised USA letter boxes were blue.
That’s quite an antique. Nicely photographed though. We have red mail boxes in Canada too but not as nice as that.
My Red post is over at http://www.mga-munimuni.info/
Thanks, Leah, I think most of the British Empire had red letterboxes.
Oh what a great shot for “red!” Unusual and creative. Terrific choice for The Hunt.
<Thank you for those kind words, Ann
Great shot. A perfect take on this week’s theme. I never thought of red post boxes mysellf! Happy weekend
Thanks Jams. I always try to find something unusual for these hunts. It is a part of the fun.
I’ve always heard that particular red referred to as ‘lipstick red’, which of course makes no sense as lipstick can be any colour at all, but there you go.
I have seen that before as well. I think the phrase is in the process of change. As are we all.
I love that and the history of it!
Great job, for real!!
Thank you
Nice red1 Happy hunting.
Thank you. You certainly have the right name for this week’s hunt
Thanks for sharing a little history lesson there, Archie.
Have a great weekend
I guess I can’t stop being a teacher
i have a red post box a couple of door down from my house and didn’t even think to post that for this week’s theme!
Although Australian Post Boxes are still red, they no longer look like this one – they are much more boring!
That is surely a great shot and a nice history lesson in one.
Cheers.
Thanks, Snoopy
Beautiful perfect for the photohunt themed.
Mine is up too:
Every Beat Of My Heart
Thanks for the visit, Anna. Welcome to Photohunt.
I always admired British mailboxes. It’s a shame they had to tape them off like that. Those are historical boxes!
It has been taped off because so many tourists kept posting letters in it. – silly people!
