Should Bush Be Impeached?
The latest Guantanamo pronouncement from the White House raises more of the same old question.
Do we, the Western World, live under a rule of law or have we been reduced to the caprices of those who have become our leaders?
A report today indicates that Saddam Hussein and Robert Mugabe may not be alone in the paranoid imprisonment syndrome.
“The Democrats want to cut Guantanamo Bay’s budget, saying that would allow the prison to stay open for six months.
Defence Secretary Robert Gates says he is working hard to find a way to shut the facility but there are obstacles to be overcome.
“The biggest challenge is finding a statutory basis for holding prisoners who should never be released and who may or may not be able to be put on trial,” he said.“
The basis of all Laws relating to imprisonment used to be the Magna Carta-inspired “Habeas corpus“.
This has been suspended in both Australia and in America. It has been suspended before, in England and Ireland and previously in America but always for a defined situation or length of time.
Australia’s Federal Anti-Terrorism Act 2005 allows the executive branch of government rather than the judiciary to imprison people and to imprison people indefinitely without charge or trial. The act also makes it an offence to even talk about somebody being imprisoned. One of the more controversial aspects of the legislation is the requirement that a parent, if informed of their child’s detention, may not inform any further person including the other parent. This clause applies also to detention of adults.
And we thought all along that “The Disappeared” only lived in Argentina.
America has also suspended Habeas corpus, which, under the constitution may only be abrogated in times of rebellion and invasion.
Of course it is possible to rewrite the definitions of “Rebellion” and “Invasion” to mean anything the Executive want them to mean. This is what Robert Gates is now trying to do since the Cheney definitions now appear a little flawed. The chinks in the White House armour are beginning to show as more and more innocent people are found to have been imprisoned and sometimes tortured. How long will it be before the rights of the Press are removed as they already have been in Australia so that all these actions may be taken in absolute secrecy? And in safety by an unscrutenised Administration?
So, is the complete removal of liberty sufficient cause for impeachment?
Or has the average American become so afraid of his or her own shadow that the actions of a few madmen cause America to grovel at the feet of a White House gone insane with power?

Bush should be impeached for many reasons, but I think congressional Democrats are too busy scheming to take ethics into account. They need to figure out a way to shore up public support and foster a good image. Instead of bullying Bush, they want to spend the time between now and a year from now pushing their own policy and distancing themselves from the mess the Republican Party has put itself into?
Oops. That should be a period at the end, not a question mark.
For the record, I personally think Bush should have been impeached years ago.
Unfortunately, there is a majority of Americans who believe Bush is still doing a good job … not the THINKING minority but the spin-doctors “patsies” … and until they have a simmilar situation to the proven corruption of Nixon they will not put themselves out to impeach their President! Sad, but true. Even with Nixon it was a struggle to get impeachment. So there will be no impeachment of Bush … after all, he’s now a lame duck so why bother???
Actually, the question is Why the hell hasn’t he been?
Peace, ethics has no part in this. Certainly not as far as the Albion Asylum is concerned.
No “majority” supports him now. I suspect the Dems are just “striving for unity”, aware of their thin margin and creating the sort of atmosphere of involuntary collusion that makes Joe Lieberman so effective a Judas goat.
Empeachment isn’t enough.
Whether they like him or not, even the Repuglicans are beginning to desert the sinking Bush ship. As he was a puppet all along, now he can be a scapegoat for the CIA powers that control him (Daddy Bush, et. al.).
There is a worldwide need to be able to trust the US again. I think hanging a war crimes conviction on him would go a long way toward that.

D Peace, Buff, Metro, Cybe, we are all in agreement. I only note that you, Cybe, left out the word “for” - “hanging FOR a - - -”
I have been wondering why Bush and Cheney have not been impeached for about 5 years now. If you do the math, you will glim that I also can not BELIEVE that they got re-elected. Cheney definitions aren’t the only thing that appears flawed: Cheney appears flawed. Oh, I just can’t go on about this. It makes me too mad.
Cheney? Didn’t he play Mr. Potter in, “It’s A Wonderful Life?”
Cybe
Darlings, as non-Americans we have no power whatsoever to impeach the President of the USA and his cohorts (including the VP) so it is my considered opinion that it is up to you .. but you are probably right … it’s too late now. Cybe, I so agree … we need to find another charismatic leader for the US for the rest of the world to feel secure again, but I can’t see it happening for a while. Maybe someone with guts in the US should take out civil action against him to ensure the teflon coating doesn’t give him the “slip under the radar” retirement he so obviously wants! Of course, such a person will end up in Guantanamo Bay as a traitor, but hey … who needs freedom these days???!
hmh, after all the fuss over a small stain on a blue dress, suddenly the killing of tens of thousands of people seems so unimportant! It is good to see our leaders have their priorities right!
Cybe - Lon?
Buff, shhhh - we will all be put on a list!
